Randall King is yet another one on the long list of great artists hailing from West Texas. While Randall isn’t necessarily a newcomer to Red Dirt and Texas Country Music, I have to admit I was relatively unfamiliar with his music and career until about a year ago. And, when Wade Bowen brought up Randall in one of our first episodes, I knew I’d better dig a little deeper.
As a “song” guy, the first impression I always try to get from an artist I’m unfamiliar with, is the quality of their songs and how well they are written. Granted some people have had great careers simply by singing other people’s songs well. When you have a great voice, a charismatic personality and a powerful live show, it doesn’t really matter if you aren’t a great writer. You’ll inevitably be pitched good songs that’ll work for you. However, when you have all of the things, I just mentioned PLUS songwriting talent, I will instantly will become a fan and a cheerleader for you. Randall King is one of those artists that in my mind, is the total package.
He’s got a great voice and delivery, but his songwriting ability is also a part of the mix. The songs he’s writes and puts out are hooky and quite simply, just damn good tunes.
Say what you want about Country Superstar Garth Brooks, but he agrees with me. Garth cut one of Randall’s songs called “The Road I’m On” for his upcoming album and says this about Randall, “Everybody always asks me, who are the new people that you’re looking at coming up. Guys, I’m going to tell you right now, this kid right here, Randall King. All I can say is, sweet guy, good guy, hell of a writer, hell of a songwriter … This is what country music is all about for me.”
Well, what else can I say after that? Here comes Episode #69 of The Troubadour Podcast featuring our new buddy, Randall King!
